GALACTOMYCES SKIN BENEFITS

Published by Ariana A on Aug 14th 2021

There are so many K-beauty ingredients out there to experiment with! Snail secretion, mugwort, centella, bee venom, the list goes on! But have you ever tried yeast for your face?

It may sounds gross. But think about how many ingredients sound gross (like snail secretion) yet are great for your skin. Well, like snail secretion, Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate is another ingredient that is worth the hype!

Galactomyces is a genus of fungi in the family Dipodascaceae (Type of yeast). Galactomyces is typically used when fermenting sake, rice, or wine. When being fermented, galactomyces go through a process called “fermentation.” During this process, they are placed inside fermentation units that are prepared with ideal environments for them to grow and multiply. As they multiply, they release filtrate, a nutrient dense liquid that is packed with vitamins, amino acids, and minerals for your skin! This byproduct is what is termed as Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate (GFF).

  • Provides antioxidant effects
  • Can help protect your skin against environmental aggressors -Reduces skin hyperpigmentation
  • Strengthens skin barrier
  • Helps attract water to the upper layer of the skin
  • Can help even out skin tone
  • Reduce oiliness
  • Reduce enlarged pores
  • Helps even out uneven skin tone

In a study conducted by the Asian Journal of Beauty and Cosmetology, researchers further revealed several key benefits of essence containing GFF among their participants. They were specifically aiming to analyze this ingredient’s effects on keratinization, pores, sebum excretion, brightness, and acne.

This is was what they found:

  • Blackheads were reduced by 21.84%
  • Enlarged pores decreased by 15.66%
  • Sebum production was reduced by 64.17% -Keratin decreased by 16.47% -Comedones decreased by 9.59%
  • Skin brightness improved by 2.49%

The study was not clear for how long participants were instructed to apply GFF essence on their skin. However, by examining these studies, GFF appears to be a promising ingredient that should not go without trying out!

GFF is a non-irritant ingredient and can be paired with any other ingredient, making GFF safe for all skin types. However, it is crucial to note that GFF may not be suitable for people who suffer from malassezia folliculitis, or fungal acne. This specific type of acne caused by fungus may be aggravated or worsened by GFF. Products containing mugwort are a better option for this specific type of acne.
